BRIEF

Assignment for a student competition organised by TRADA (Timber Research and Development Authority). To celebrate and explore timber's quality, required designing a modular multi-function tearoom/café/educational space, with a minimal carbon footprint, this involved devising a clever modular design that allows for the re-use and reassembly of its timber components. The design allows for easy transportation, quick on-site erection, an energy-efficient building envelope, and a sustainable 'self-build' construction for a low technical knowledge of the self-builder. An X-PLATE connection system with CLT panels allows the building to potentially be erected by volunteers, directed by professionally trained supervisors.

The proposal suggests the following:

  • A function room 9mx 9m

  • A kitchen area to include a serving counter 9m x 6 m.

  • The foundations must have minimal disruptions to the ground bellow

  • The modular design must be capable of being mass-produced.

  • Entrances and openings must be Disability discrimination Act 1995 (DDA) compliant.

  • The site overall must allow for refuse storage from kitchen waste.
