BAROQUE CONCERT, FINLAND
Commission | Graphic Design
Jacobstad, Finland | 2013
BRIEF
The Baroque & Classical Concerto took place in the Schauman Hall, a theatre venue in the city of Jakobstad in Finland. Our commission included graphic design work for the event's advertisement; posters, flyers, etc, as well as some stage propping, and assistance with lighting. The client required a contemporary artistic interpretation of the Baroque. Through the appropriating of characters from classical baroque paintings by artists, such as Frans Hals, it felt satirically appropriate to add bovine heads to their torsos. This serves as a light 'critique' of the toxic masculinity present in many art pieces of the time. Later, it was suggested to use cardboard cutouts of these comical characters to adorn the concert stage, which included a photo projection of the famous Palace of Versailles interior. Initially, our proposition was to make these figures relatively tall, but then we realised that it would add another comical twist if they were in fact just short of average human size.
